Dolly Sods

Dolly Sods Wilderness in Monongahela National Forest (Dry Fork, WV) spans Grant, Randolph, and Tucker County, WV, to the south of Canaan Valley. This wild and rugged terrain features open mountaintop meadows accented with brilliant gem colors throughout much of the year with forested vistas and vast rock outcrops over its more than 17,000 acres. Mountain laurel, blueberries, cranberries, stunted windswept spruce and pine, ramps, and carnivorous sundew are among the flora observable in this fascinating area, which also hosts unexploded live munitions from its time as a WWII artillery range (avoid these by staying on established trails). A favorite destination of wilderness campers, hikers, backpackers, and photographers from around the world, the Sods offers a unique opportunity to explore its magnificent alpine bogs, heaths, glades, and flora along 47 miles of trails.
